Voltage Sourced Converter (VSC) HVDC Technology Benefits

There are two types of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems: line-commutated converter (LCC) and Voltage Sourced Converter (VSC). While the LLC type requires an external power source for commutation, the VSC type does not. The innate ability of separately controlling active/reactive power and the small compact footprint of VSC-based HVDC allow for its application to weak systems and remove the need for additional reactive compensation from harmonic filters and other reactive voltage support.

The global HVDC market is expected to grow at a robust rate, with annual investments in excess of $10 billion by the end of 2025. The VSC segment will increasingly account for the majority of the HVDC investments. Mitsubishi Electric’s VSC-based HVDC Diamond Solutions use proprietary, next generation X-Series Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) technology. HVDC-Diamond® is the brand name for the components and technologies encompassing the converter station and the control and protection system governing the HVDC system. HVDC Diamond system and equipment are designed in a unique Modular Multi-Level Converter (MMC) configuration that enhances the advantages of VSC HVDC. MMC delivers superior performance and operating efficiencies, resulting in fast dynamic response, independent active and reactive power control, black start capability, increased fault current handling, lower switching losses, and diminished harmonic impact.

Mitsubishi Electric’s VSC-based HVDC solutions feature power transfer ratings in excess of 1,000 MW, with a DC voltage level of up to +/- 400 kV DC.

New Mitsubishi Electric Verification Facility

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation is currently building a 50 MW HVDC verification facility at its Transmission and Distribution Center in Amagasaki, Japan. The facility, completed in early 2018, provides the highest achievable levels of safety and cost-effectiveness for voltage-sourced converters (VSC)-based high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems.
